(Now And Then There's) A Fool Such As I foi escrita por Bill Trader em 1952 e gravada por Hank Snow no final desse mesmo ano. A gravação de Snow (RCA 5034) subiu até à 4ª posição da tabela de música country da Billboard. No início de 1953 Jo Stafford (Columbia 39930), Tommy Edwards (MGM 11395) e The Robins (RCA 47-5175) gravaram as suas versões da canção. Só a versão de Stafford entrou na tabela (20ª posição, nos Singles Mais Vendidos).

Elvis gravou (Now And Then There's) A Fool Such As I em 10 de Junho de 1958, nos estúdios da RCA em Nashville, enquanto estava de licença do Exército. O take 9 foi o seleccionado para lançar. O barítono na gravação foi Ray Walker dos Jordanaires. Foi a sua primeira sessão com Elvis. O single de Elvis subiu até à 2ª posição na tabela Hot 100 da Billboard e ficou 15 semanas na tabela. Foi a canção Come Softly To Me, dos Fleetwoods, que impediu que A Fool Such As I chegasse ao primeiro lugar. Na tabela de rhythm & blues, a canção chegou à 16ª posição. Foi Nº 1 durante cinco semanas na Inglaterra. O disco vendeu mais de um milhão de exemplares.
