Blue Hawaii foi escrita por Leo Robin e Ralph Rainger em 1937, e apresentada no filme Waikiki Wedding por Bing Crosby, que também gravou a canção nesse mesmo ano. A gravação de Crosby (Decca 1175) foi feita com Lani McIntire and His Hawaiians. Em 1959 Billy Vaughn alcançou a 37ª posição na tabela Hot 100 com a sua gravação de Blue Hawaii (Dot 15879).

Elvis gravou Blue Hawaii para o seu filme de 1961 com o mesmo título em 22 de Março de 1961, no Radio Recorders. O take 7 foi o escolhido para o filme e para lançar em disco. Depois da difusão via satélite de Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii, Elvis gravou Blue Hawaii para a versão da NBC-TV do especial, que foi difundida nos Estados Unidos em 4 de Abril de 1973.
