Informação: Johnny Cash contou uma história diferente acerca da origem de Blue Suede Shoes. Enquanto Perkins, Elvis e Cash estavam a actuar em Amory, no Mississippi, numa noite em 1955, Cash contou a Perkins a história sobre um sargento negro que tinha tido na Força Aérea chamado C.V. White. O Sargento White entrava com bastante frequência no quarto de Cash para lhe perguntar como é que ele (White) estava e depois dizia, "Não me pisem é nos sapatos de camurça azul!" (E não importava nada se o Sargento White estava com as botas normais da Força Aérea calçadas). Perkins achou que a história de Cash era uma boa idea para uma canção. Enquanto Elvis actuava sobre o palco, Perkins escreveu Blue Suede Shoes. Seja qual for a história, Blue Suede Shoes de Perkins (Sun 234) foi lançada em 1 de Janeiro de 1956. Por volta de Março já ocupava a 4ª posição no Top 100 da Billboard, a 2ª posição na tabela country (Heartbreak Hotel evitou que chegasse ao número 1) e a 2ª posição na tabela de rhythm and blues - foi a primeira canção na história da música a entrar para todas as três tabelas. Blue Suede Shoes vendeu um milhão de exemplares. Foram três as versões de Blue Suede Shoes que entraram para as tabelas em 1956: a de Perkins, a de Elvis e a de Boyd Bennett and His Rockets (King 4903), que chegou à 63ª posição na tabela Top 100. Em 1973 Johnny Rivers (United Artists 198) chegou ao 38º lugar com a sua gravação. Elvis gravou Blue Suede Shoes em 30 de Janeiro de 1956, nos estúdios da RCA em Nova Iorque. Muito embora o single de Setembro de 1956 não tenha entrado para as tabelas, no início do ano Blue Suede Shoes tinha alcançado a 24ª posição na tabela Top 100 da Billboard, como parte integrante do EP Elvis Presley (RCA EPA-747). Teve uma permanência de 12 semanas na tabela. Elvis cantou Blue Suede Shoes durante o seu teste cinematográfico para a Paramount Pictures em 1 de Abril de 1956, e nos seguintes programas televisivos: Stage Show (11 de Fevereiro de 1956; 17 de Março de 1956), The Milton Berle Show (3 de Abril de 1956), e em Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii (14 de Janeiro de 1973). Adicionalmente, uma actuação da canção no International Hotel de Las Vegas em Agosto de 1970 foi utilizada no documentário Elvis - That's The Way It Is. Blue Suede Shoes foi gravada para o programa especial televisivo de 1968, Elvis, mas não foi utilizada. No entanto, uma versão dividida, com a primeira porção da canção gravada em 27 de Junho de 1698 no espectáculo das 18.00h e a última parte da canção gravada em 29 de Junho de 1968 no espectáculo das 20.00h, pode ser ouvida no documentário de 1981, This Is Elvis. A versão de Blue Suede Shoes que se ouve numa jukebox em G.I. Blues foi gravada nos estúdios da RCA em Hollywood, em 28 de Abril de 1960.
