Early Morning Rain foi escrita por Gordon Lightfoot e gravada
pela primeira vez por Peter, Paul and Mary, em 1965 (Warner Bros. 5659). A
sua gravação chegou à 91ª posição na tabela Hot 100 da Billboard e à
13ª posição na tabela Easy Listening. No ano seguinte, George Hamilton IV
pegou na sua versão de Early Morning Rain (RCA 47-8924) e levou-a até à 9ª
posição na tabela Country. Também em 1966, Chad and Jeremy lançaram a
canação (Columbia 43490).
Elvis gravou Early
Morning Rain pela primeira vez nos estúdios da RCA em Nashville em 15 de
Março de 1971. Foi uma das faixas do álbum Elvis Now. Depois da
difusão mundial de Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii em 14 de Janeiro de 1973,
Elvis voltou a gravar a canção, desta vez para inclusão na edição prolongada
americana do especial televisivo, difundido pela NBC em 4 de Abril de 1973.
Essa versão surgiu no LP Mahalo From Elvis. Early Morning Rain também
foi cantada no especial da CBS de 1977, Elvis In Concert.
