Há várias versões quanto à origem desta canção folk clássica. Uma história conta que Frankie and Johnny remonta à guerra de 1812. Quando os soldados Tennessee and Kentucky Rifles (que serviram sob o comando de Andrew Jackson na Batalha de New Orleans) regressaram a casa depois da guerra, cantaram esta canção. Supostamente tinham-na ouvido em Crescent Cinty, na Louisiana, uma cidade onde se falava mais francês, com o título Françoise et Jean.

Outra história remonta às origens de uma noite quente de Verão de St. Louis, em 1888. Frankie (uma mulher) deu um tiro ao seu namorado, Johnny, com uma derringer que tinha escondida no seu cinto de ligas. Ela tinha acabado de saber que Johnny "a tinha enganado".

Em 1904 Hughie Cannon teve a primeira versão da canção publicada, usando o título He Done Me Wrong. Vários artistas têm gravado Frankie and Johnny ao longo dos anos, incluindo Ted Lewis (Columbia 1017) em 1927, Gene Autry em 1929, Johnny Cash (usando o título Frankie’s Man, Johnny) em 1959 (Columbia 41371), Brook Benton (Mercury 71859) em 1961, e Sam Cooke (RCA 8215) em 1963. A gravação de Cooke foi a que melhor se classificou nas tabelas, chegando ao 14º lugar.

Elvis gravou Frankie and Johnny servindo-se do arranjo musical de Alex Gottlieb, Fred Karger e Ben Weisman, em Maio de 1965 no Radio Recorders. No seu filme, Frankie and Johnny, foi apoiado vocalmente por um côro que incluía Donna Douglas, Sue Ane Langdon e Harry Morgan. O lançamento em single de Frankie and Johnny teve uma permanência de oito semanas na tabela Hot 100 da Billboard, chegando à 25ª posição.
