John Hartford compôs e gravou pela primeira vez Gentle On My Mind (RCA 47-9175) em 1967. A sua gravação alcançou o 60º lugar na tabela de música country. Inspirou-se a compor a canção depois de ter visto o filme Dr. Jivago. As cenas das viagens e imagens agradáveis deixaram-lhe uma impressão duradoura. Hartford e o editor de música Chuck Glaser ofereceram primeiro a canção a Johnny Cash, que a recusou. Poucos meses depois do lançamento de Hartford, Glen Campbell gravou Gentle On My Mind (Capitol 5939). A sua gravação saiu-se ligeiramente melhor que a de Hartford, alcançando o 30º lugar na tabela de música country. Em 1968 o disco foi relançado e chegou ao 39º lugar na tabela Hot 100 e a 8º lugar na tabela Easy-Listening. Gentle On My Mind subsequentemente tornou-se a canção tema da série televisiva de variedades de Campbell pela CBS, a Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. A canção foi galardoada com 4 Grammys em 1968: Melhor Desempenho Folk, Melhor Canção de Country e Western, Melhor Gravação de Country e Western e Melhor Desempenho Vocal Masculino de Country e Western (Campbell). Outras gravações da canção incluem versões de Patti Page (Columbia 44353) em 1968, de Boots Randolph (Monument 1081) em 1968, de Aretha Franklin (Atlantic 2619) em 1969 e de Dean Martin (Reprise 0812) em 1969. 

Elvis gravou Gentle On My Mind em 15 de Janeiro de 1969 nos American Sound Studios de Memphis. Ronnie Milsap tocou o piano e Ed Kollis tocou a harmónica nesta gravação.
