Muddy Waters
(nome verdadeiro: McKinley Morganfield) escreveu e gravou Got My Mojo
Working (Chess 1652) em 1957.
No entanto, a
sua versão não entrou para as tabelas. O grande sucesso foi o de Jimmy
Smith, em 1966, com o lançamento instrumental pela Verve Records (Verve
10393), que chegou à 51ª posição na tabela de rhythm & blues. Um “mojo” é um
amuleto de vudu utilizado para melhorar as capacidades sexuais. Outras
gravações com títulos que incluem a palavra mojo por vários artistas incluem
Mojo Hand, Mojo Strut e Mojo Blues.
Elvis gravou Got
My Mojo Working numa gravação de jam session (em conjunto com Keep Your
Hands Off It) em 5 de Junho de 1970, nos estúdios da RCA, em Nashville. Por
qualquer motivo, o LP Love Letters From Elvis apontava Preston Foster
como sendo o compositor de Got My Mojo Working.
