Um dia, enquanto falava com a sua mulher ao telefone, o compositor Joe Allison disse-lhe para ela aproximar a boca mais do telefone, visto que falava tão baixinho. Por altura em que Allison chegou a casa, a sua mulher Audrey tinha escrito o primeiro verso de He’ll Have To Go – “Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone” (Põe os teus doces lábios um pouco mais perto do telefone). O resto da canção surgiu-lhes com rapidez. He’ll Have to Go foi primeiro gravada por Jim Reeves (RCA 47-7643) em 1959. A sua gravação atingiu o 2º lugar na tabela Hot 100 da Billboard, foi número um na tabela country e chegou ao 13º lugar na tabela de rhythm and blues. Diz-se que vendeu mais de três milhões de exemplares. Em 1960, Jeane Black gravou um popular disco de resposta, He’ll Have to Stay (Ele Terá de Ficar) (Capitol 4368), que chegou à 14ª posição na tabela Hot 100 e à 6ª posição na tabela country. Essa canção também foi uma composição de Joe Allison-Audrey Allison. 

Elvis gravou He’ll Have to Go na noite de 31 de Outubro para 1 de Novembro de 1976, em Graceland.
