Don Gibson escreveu I Can't Stop Loving You em 1957 numa casa móvel em Knoxville, no Tennessee. A sua gravação (RCA 47-7133) chegou à primeira posição da tabela country em 1958 e vendeu mais de um milhão de exemplares (tal com o lado B, Oh Lonesome Me). A versão de Kitty Wells (Decca 30551) também se classificou nas tabelas em 1958 (Nº 8 na tabela country). Em 1962 Ray Charles incluiu I Can't Stop Loving You no seu LP que muito vendeu Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music (ABC-Paramount ABCS-410), que foi o primeiro álbum de ouro para a ABC-Paramount Records. O seu lançamento em single chegou ao primeiro lugar na tabela Hot 100, na tabela de rhythm and lbues e na tabela Easy-Listening. I Can't Stop Loving You foi a canção Número Um de 1962 e vendeu mais de um milhão de exemplares. Até Count Basie gravou uma versão instrumental da canção (Reprise 20170).
