I Got a Woman

I Got a Woman foi escrita e gravada pela primeira vez (com o título I've Got a Woman) por Ray Charles em 1954 na estação de rádio WGST, nos campos da Universidade de Tecnologia da Georgia, em Atlanta. Charles baseou a melodia da canção gospel My Jesus Is All the World I Need. A sua gravação (Atlantic 1050) chegou ao 2º lugar da tabela de rhythm and blues da Billboard no início de 1955. Outras gravações populares de I Got a Woman incluem a de Jimmy McGriff (Sue 770), um instrumental de 1962; a de Ricky Nelson (Decca 31475) em 1963; a de Freddie Scott (Colpix 709) em 1963; e a de Bob Luman (Epic 10755) em 1971. Tanto Charles como McGriff utilizaram o título I've Got a Woman.

 

Elvis cantou I Got a Woman no Louisiana Hayride e em tournée durante 1955. Algumas pessoas especulam que ele gravou a canção enquanto ainda estava na Sun Records, mas não existem quaisquer provas disso.

 

Às 14h00 de 10 de Janeiro de 1956, Elvis gravou I Got a Woman nos estúdios da RCA, em Nashville. Foi a sua primeira gravação para a RCA. Os músicos na sessão foram Elvis, Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana e Floyd Cramer. Os apoios vocais foram disponibilizados por Gordon Stoker, Ben Speer e Brock Speer. I Got a Woman apareceu no primeiro LP de Elvis, Elvis Presley, e posteriormente, em 1956, foi lançado em single. Não entrou nas tabelas. Na Inglaterra, I Got a Woman foi lançada em álbuns com o título I Got a Sweetie.

 

Elvis cantou I Got a Woman na sua primeira apresentação no Stage Show (28 de Janeiro de 1956). Uma actuação da canção em Hampton Roads, Virginia, em 9 de Abril de 1972, foi utilizada no documentário Elvis On Tour. I Got a Woman era uma presença constante do repertório de Elvis nos anos 70. Cantava-a muitas vezes em medley com Amen.
