second 45 wasn't released to the national chart, “Good Rockin’ Tonight” reached
the number 3 slot on the Memphis chart. And has recently been acknowledged as a Dean Martin became an early and lasting influence on Elvis, and between the 12th and 16th September 1954 Elvis tried a number that he'd seen Dino sing in the movie Scared Stiff, "I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine", the final song they recorded at this session was "Good Rockin' Tonight", in my opinion the best track to come from these sessions, as with "That's All Right" the trio took an R&B number and put a shot of rockabilly into it. Elvis delivers a staggering vocal on both these numbers. Although Sam indulged in Elvis' love of ballads, he was in no doubt as to what songs would really cut it in the charts, "everything had to be a stinger" he later recalled, and it had to have great rhythm. The two sides made up Elvis' second Sun single, released on September 25th 1954, and by now Sam and the trio had found a truly distinctive sound. Although this 45 didn't chart nationally it did reach number 3 on the Memphis chart. |
